What Makes Touch Controls Actually Good

May 24, 2026 · Markus Lindqvist

Great touch controls are invisible — you only notice them when they are bad. After years of playing on phones, I have a short list of things that reliably separate the good from the frustrating.

Big targets matter. Skill icons and buttons need room so you are not fat-fingering the wrong move mid-fight. Games that cram a console UI onto a phone screen almost always feel cramped.

Options are the real tell. The best games let you switch between tilt and tap steering, remap a button, or adjust sensitivity. When a developer bothers with that, it usually means they actually tested on hardware you own.

Finally, portrait one-handed modes are underrated. Some of my favorite games are the ones I can play with a coffee in the other hand. If a game forces two thumbs in landscape for every tiny action, it had better be worth the commitment.
